myostyle FAQ

General Questions

Is EMS dangerous?

In recent years, we have gathered lots of experience and understand the requirements for safe training with electricity very well. Thanks to this understanding, we developed myostyle with maximum safety in mind. However, EMS training is also very safe from a physiological perspective, as it places very little strain on our joints and tendons. There is also the fact that the training programmes can be adapted to suit any fitness level, which means that you will not experience overtraining when the system is used correctly. You can also experience excellent results when you give yourself adequate time to rest and recover between training sessions. It is important to always listen to your body and develop a feeling for the electrical impulses. Of course, we have implemented several safety features in our system, such as making it difficult from a technical perspective to increase the intensity too quickly.

Furthermore, you do not need to worry about the effects of electricity on or in your body: We, or more precisely our muscles, are used to electrical impulses from birth. Electrical impulses are transmitted from our brain to our muscles via neurons.

Are there studies that prove that EMS is effective?

In the last few decades, many scientists and medical experts have researched EMS training very intensively and multiple studies have confirmed its effectiveness.

What is EMS?

EMS is an initialism that stands for “Electrical Muscle Stimulation”. It refers to a technology that has already been used successfully in health support for around 50 years. It has primarily been used for building muscle after long periods of inactivity and for recovery purposes. However, it has also been used for muscle relaxation purposes. Since the 1970s, elite athletes have also taken advantage of the benefits offered by EMS, such as significant increases in strength and power and accelerated recovery.

Around 15 years ago, the electrodes, which were previously stuck onto the skin individually, were sewn into suit systems, which made it possible to easily activate all key muscle groups simultaneously. As a result of this development, EMS could no longer just be used for therapy, instead it could continue its success story as a technology for full-body training in the fitness industry.

Is training with myostyle complicated?

No! We have revamped EMS training and made sure that myostyle is as simple as possible to use. All you have to do is put on your myostyle smart suit, connect the smart device, open the smart app and get started! Our videos will give you a comprehensive guide on how to use the system.

What is low frequency?

Many EMS systems use low-frequency (LF) impulses that are significantly lower than 1000 hertz (Hz). The skin resistance represents a significant barrier for this frequency, which means that the impulses do not penetrate as deep. This can result in an unpleasant effect in which the low-frequency impulses feel like little pinpricks while training. See also: What is medium frequency?

How do I know that I am training properly without a trainer?

From the very first time you open the myostyle smart app, we’ll guide you through every step – simply follow our training videos!

Can you really burn calories with EMS, and if so, how many?

When it comes to training intensity, and therefore calories burned per training session, EMS training is leagues above other types of sport and training. It is comparable to HIT (high-intensity training). Depending on the training programme selected, you can burn up to 400 kilocalories (kcal) in just 20 minutes – and when you factor in the so-called afterburn effect, this number is much higher.

I saw an advert for a much smaller EMS device. Can it do the same as myostyle?

No. Lots of manufacturers call their products full-body EMS systems, even though their devices can only stimulate individual muscles – usually one after the other. However, genuine full-body EMS training requires several pairs of electrodes in a purpose-built suit that can stimulate several muscle groups simultaneously. So far, studies have only been able to prove the effectiveness of EMS training when it has been used as a form of full-body training.

What is medium frequency?

In contrast to many other suppliers, myostyle uses modulated medium-frequency (MF) currents that are significantly higher than 1000 Hz. Compared to low-frequency impulses, these faster impulses penetrate more deeply into your musculature and have a much greater effect. This leads to something referred to as the “volume effect”, which enables higher and more intense levels of stimulation. This results in stronger muscle contractions and better effects from training. At the same time, the higher frequencies generally make the training experience feel much more pleasant. See also: What is low frequency?

How does EMS training feel? Does it hurt?

The way it feels for you depends on a wide range of personal factors. In general, the following applies: Good training with electrical muscle stimulation should not be painful!

How does EMS training feel? Does it hurt?

The way it feels for you depends on a wide range of personal factors. In general, the following applies: Good training with electrical muscle stimulation should not be painful!

Many of our customers report that the stimulation feels like a wavy tingling or as if ants are crawling on their skin. This is a good sign of positive cell activation.

The way EMS feels is also dependent on the type and frequency of the electrical impulses used. myostyle only uses medium-frequency impulses and a modulated low-frequency current. This combination results in an impulse frequency that most people find very pleasant. In contrast to the purely low-frequency impulses used by many manufacturers, medium-frequency impulses overcome the skin barrier much more effectively. This makes the electrical impulses feel much more tolerable and even pleasant. Another advantage of the combined type of current used by myostyle is a more manageable level of muscle soreness in the days after training, if you even have any muscle soreness. It is often falsely assumed that extreme, unbearable muscle soreness is evidence of a good training session – but this is not the case.

Can I lose weight with EMS training?

The simple answer is yes! With a myostyle training programme, you can even target difficult areas like the waist – or you can send your metabolism into overdrive and reduce your body fat percentage. Intensive training with myostyle results in your body using more energy, and therefore burning more calories. And then there is the afterburn effect, which is particularly pronounced with EMS training. This means that your muscles use up more calories even on recovery days due to the intense training sessions. When you follow a personalised training plan and train regularly, you can achieve great results in just a short time.

How can Myostyle help with muscle tension?

EMS training, a method used for decades in various applications, can be very effective in alleviating muscle discomfort. Training with myostyle enables you to strengthen the small muscles located deep within the body, which provides improved support for your spine. Muscle tension is often a symptom of weak muscles – and you can train these very effectively with myostyle!

Does myostyle help to combat cellulite?

EMS training with myostyle increases your metabolism significantly and activates your circulation. These are the best ways to prevent or reduce unwelcome cellulite. Furthermore, stronger muscles also make your skin tighter.

How often should I train with myostyle?

The answer to this question depends on your own personal goals and the corresponding training programme. In general, we recommend no more than 2 training sessions per week for muscle training programmes. What is the reason for this? EMS training with myostyle strains muscles throughout the entire body. No other sport or training method does this. This also means that there is a risk of underestimating an EMS training session. Due to the intensive strain placed on your muscles, you should give your body between 48 and 72 hours to recover – with 72 hours being optimal. Think about it: Your muscles grow during the period of recovery, not during training!

Cardiovascular training and relaxation programmes can be completed multiple times per week with myostyle. But remember: More isn’t always better!

What are the advantages and benefits of EMS training?

EMS training offers a whole host of advantages, but we’ll list the most important ones here:

  • It is the perfect way to train. Not only can EMS alleviate muscle tension, it can also prevent it. This is because the electrical impulses can also stimulate the muscles located deep within the back, which are difficult to target through conventional methods.
  • Goodbye musclehead gyms! EMS is a particularly effective way to build muscle, since the electrical stimulation is able to activate close to 100 percent of the targeted muscle fibres.
  • EMS stimulates your circulation and energy usage – which sends your metabolism into overdrive!
  • Do you want tighter skin? Voilà – EMS can do that too! The electrical impulses can promote collagen production, which creates firmer connective tissue and reduces the appearance of unwanted cellulite!
  • EMS training builds your skeletal muscles. EMS gets your whole body in shape. Muscles that are difficult to reach are also difficult to train with conventional training methods, but EMS overcomes this hurdle.
  • EMS can do so much more: With our special massage programmes, you can take a break from the stresses of daily life whenever you want.

A wide range of additional benefits of EMS training have been proven in multiple studies.

Who shouldn’t use EMS as a training method and should therefore avoid myostyle?

In the following cases, the myostyle training system should not be used, or should only be used after consulting a qualified medical practitioner. Please note that myostyle is not a medical device:

  • Users who release excessively high levels of muscle enzymes and proteins (e.g. creatine kinase, myoglobulin) as result of muscular training. The release of these enzymes and proteins can also be caused as a result of taking medication (e.g. cholesterol-lowering drugs such as statins) at the same time as training and requires medical supervision.
  • Users who suffer from a seizure disorder (epilepsy)
  • Users with open wounds and skin diseases in the areas where the electrodes are attached
  • Users who have undergone an operation that has not healed yet in an area that will be affected by EMS
  • Users suffering from inflammatory ailments in an area that will be affected by EMS, such as inflammation of the intervertebral discs, bones, blood vessels or soft tissue
  • Users with a malignant disease in an area that will be affected by EMS
  • Users with electronic implants, such as a pacemaker or pump
  • Users who have had coronary stents fitted
  • Users with cosmetic implants (e.g. breast implants) in an area that will be affected by EMS
  • Users with cardiac arrhythmias
  • Pregnant users
  • Users who have recently suffered from a herniated disc or other instabilities such as hernias (e.g. an umbilical hernia) in an area that will be affected by EMS
  • Users who have suffered a broken or fractured bone that has not healed yet in an area that will be affected by EMS
  • Users with blood clots (thrombi) in an area that will be affected by EMS
  • Users with bone diseases in the affected area that are associated with a higher risk of fractures, such as the later stages of osteoporosis (bone decalcification)
  • Users that are at an increased risk of haemorrhage
  • Users suffering from a fever or general illness that could be made worse through physical exertion
  • Users that are not fit enough to take part in physical exercise or sport
  • Children or people with a limited ability to communicate or react

Is EMS training with myostyle suitable for someone who is pregnant?

Because we have not found any studies about EMS training during pregnancy, we advise against the use of myostyle while you are pregnant.

How quickly will I see results with EMS training?

This, of course, depends on your individual physiology as well as your discipline when it comes to training and nutrition. You should generally be able to see visible results after around one to three months.

How is EMS training better than conventional training methods?

We don’t like to use the terms “better” or “worse”, since the quality of a training session primarily depends on personal experience and your training goals. However, one big advantage of EMS training with myostyle cannot be dismissed: No other sport or training method allows you to activate almost every muscle group at the same time while also protecting your joints.

Can I combine EMS with conventional training?

Absolutely! Using EMS to complement or in combination with other types of sport or training methods allows you to structure your training very efficiently and save time. For example, with a myostyle EMS training session, you can target the specific muscles that are important for different types of sports – such as the muscles responsible for explosive power for boxing.

Where is myostyle developed and produced?

myostyle was developed entirely in Germany – both the technology and the training programmes.

How long does a training session last?

A myostyle training session lasts between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the programme selected.

How long has myostyle been around?

myostyle is totally new on the market. However, the myostyle team has decades of experience with EMS – both on the front line and behind the scenes. That is why we decided to revamp EMS and developed myostyle from the ground up based on the latest scientific findings.

Can I pay for the myostyle training system in instalments?

Yes. You can either purchase your myostyle with a one-off payment or convenient monthly instalments.
