Sebastian Fanselow in Expert interview on the topic: EMS in Tennis training
Although EMS training originally came from the Rehab Sector, it has become firmly established in Fitness Sports in recent years: EMS is the perfect choice for those who don't like sport and want to stay fit in just minimal time. But how useful is training with Electrical Muscle Stimulation for active Athletes? Can they improve sports-specific movements with EMS? Are EMS workouts worthwhile in order to strengthen speed or reduce susceptibility to injury?
We asked Stefan Fanselow about this: The 31-year-old is one of the best Tennis Players in Germany and reached the final three times in the M25 tournaments of the ATP Challenger Tour in 2023.
myostyle: Mr. Fanselow, as a Professional Tennis Player your focus is certainly on top performance on the court. Could you tell us how you train to improve your performance and fitness?
Sebastian Fanselow: My normal training day includes 3-4 hours of Tennis training and 1-2 hours of Conditioning training. I also do a Warm Up and at the end of the day I usually stretch for about 45 minutes. If there are any problem areas to work on, I also go to the Physiotherapist 1-2 times a week.
myostyle: The EMS training has attracted a lot of attention in recent years. Can you share your experiences with EMS in the context of your Tennis training?
Sebastian Fanselow: Unfortunately, I haven't been able to incorporate EMS training into my tennis training much yet. However, I could imagine that it could improve my speed on the court and also prevent injuries.
myostyle: Speaking of Speed - Tennis requires a combination of Speed, Endurance and explosive Movements. To what extent can EMS training help to optimize these different aspects?
Sebastian Fanselow: EMS training puts me in a position to improve my Speed Strength, as it has a positive influence on Muscle Building. And as you say, Speed Strength is very important in Tennis, so I think it can help me a lot in this regard.
myostyle: The Regeneration after intensive Training sessions and matches is crucial for every competitive athlete. How does EMS Training help to shorten your recovery time and ensure you stay in top shape for upcoming challenges?
Sebastian Fanselow: With EMS Training, I can stimulate my muscles continuously, which makes me feel more rested the next day. My legs are simply lighter and I can move better the next day. Recovery in Tennis is incredibly important.
myostyle: Tennis players often have to deal with injuries and excessive strain. To what extent can EMS Training help you to minimize the risk of injury and make your muscles more resistant to strain?
Sebastian Fanselow: Injuries in Tennis are often caused by excessive strain or muscle weakness. EMS training allows me to keep my muscles active and strong, without putting too much strain on them. This makes my body more resistant and resilient when it comes to injuries.
myostyle: As a professional Tennis player, you travel a lot. How do you integrate EMS training into your travel schedule and how has it helped you to keep your fitness at a consistently high level?
Sebastian Fanselow: When I'm traveling, I don't always have a fully equipped gym at my disposal. EMS training helps me to keep my muscles in top shape, even if I'm just in my hotel room or going for a quick run. This means I always have my gym with me in my suitcase.
myostyle: How do you rate the potential of EMS training after injuries or to reduce recovery time? Can it be a good alternative to conventional training methods?
Sebastian Fanselow: I rate the potential as extremely high. As we Tennis players are constantly traveling and the training conditions change very often, it is important to keep the training as effective as possible. I think that EMS training is above all a very good way of supplementing conventional training and can help athletes progress even further.
